Shockwave Therapy

Having been a career-long super-sceptic of anything that plugs into the wall, the overwhelming body of evidence on the efficacy of Shockwave Therapy is now too impressive to ignore. We have taken the leap and invested in this state-of-the-art therapeutic modality to bring the benefits to our patients here in Tadcaster. Usually only found in mega-clinics and hospitals this fantastic treatment option is now available within our clinic.

What is it?

Spawned from the lithotripsy machines used to treat kidney stones Radial Shockwave (also known as Extra-corporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT or SWT)) produces low energy pressure waves that are delivered into damaged tissues such as tendons to increases blood flow, provide an analgesic effect and stimulates the body’s natural repair and regeneration processes.

How do the sessions work?

As with most things we do not just treat in isolation and insist on both a rigorous assessment, for both diagnostic and suitability reasons, as well as adherence to the tried and tested rehab-protocols alongside.

We will be offering packages of 4 or 6 sessions, depending on severity and chronicity, to be delivered weekly. Our sessions will take place within the standard physio follow-up sessions. The actual treatment time is relatively small but the purported benefits last many, many months post-treatment. We would ideally follow everyone up at 6-10 weeks after the final session.

What conditions will it help?

Guided by both the NICE recommendations, clinical evidence and experience we will primarily offer this service for Tendinopathies. This includes Plantar Fasciitis (Plantar heel pain), Achilles tendinopathy, Patella tendinopathy, High-hamstring tendinopathy, gluteal tendinopathy (Greater-trochanteric pain syndrome) and Tennis elbow.

Does it hurt?

Well…..it does a bit…… We are causing a controlled level of trauma to stimulate the healing process. It does however often lead to an immediate reduction in pain post-treatment.

What is the cost?

Our 4 session package costs £290 or 6 sessions £425 inclusive of the standard physio session charge. Sessions will typically take 30-40 minutes. Additional sessions can be bolted on if required. This fee is considerably more economical than more invasive/surgical procedures or when the same treatment is administered by an orthopaedic consultant.
